Writing about music is a lot like translating fine wine into words.

Experienced sommeliers can do so with ease, as can well-versed music critics, but it isn’t always an easy endeavor.

Beautiful music, much like a luscious Bordeaux, can be simple or complex, austere or intricately layered. It can comfort, delight, inspire, and transport us.

Done well, it can move us beyond words, beyond ourselves and the limitations of our own emotional capacity, impelling us into feelings both familiar and foreign.

Aimee Mann’s music does all of these things.

She makes music for thinkers, for the slightly damaged and cynical, introverted romantics who find beauty and charm in the emotionally dissonant.
